1.) You and your spouse could be heading to Mars. America millionaire Dennis Tito, who paid his way to fly into space in 2001, has formed the Inspiration Mars Foundation. He wants to send people to Mars – not to land on the planet, but to take advantage of a rare planetary alignment that would allow a relatively easy, quick flyby of Mars, getting to the red planet and back in 501 days. To combat the loneliness and isolation that would doubtless set in during such a mission, Tito is proposing sending one male and one female, preferably a married couple. He has hired Paragon Space Development Corporation, which has expertise in life support systems, to look into what would be needed to keep two crewmembers alive and functional in a small capsule for more than 500 days.
2.) If you’re someone who stops and Starbucks on the drive to your job, and then eats lunch out each workday, here’s reason to reconsider that routine. A new survey has concluded the average worker spends $11.84 a day on coffee, lunch and snacks. Assuming that you take a total of 3 weeks of vacation and sick time a year, plus 10 days off for holidays, that adds up to over 27-hundred dollars a year. Over a 40 year work career, that adds up to more than $110,000, meaning if your average salary is $55,000 a year, you’ll blow two full years of pay eating at work.
3.) St. Patrick’s Day is still weeks away, but the Irish can be proud today. In Dublin, the world record for the largest gathering of people with Mohawk-style haircuts has been set. 257 people had the unique hairstyle shaved into their heads by a gathering of 30 barbers and stylists, breaking the old record of 109. The event was the 4th year of a radio station’s "Shave or Dye" campaign, which has so far raised nearly $6 million for the Irish Cancer Society.
