1.) If you want the best toilet paper, go to Wal-Mart. Consumer Reports says their study, based on four key criteria, finds the top performers are Great Value Ultra Strong, Walmart's house brand, and two products from White Cloud that are exclusively available at Wal-Mart. The White Cloud 3-Ply Ultra Soft and Thick combines softness with superior strength and disintegration to be ranked the best by Consumer Reports. On the other end, the “stinkers” in the rankings are CVS Earth Essentials, which received subpar scores for both strength and softness. Whole Foods' 365 Everyday Value and Walgreens' Big Roll performed only slightly better.
2.) Environmental activists have scored a huge victory in Los Angeles, where the city council has voted 11-1 to make the city the biggest in the US to ban plastic grocery bags. Stores that sell perishable foods, including supermarkets, mini-marts, and retailers that have grocery sections like Target, will be barred from distributing plastic bags under the ordinance. Around 2 billion plastic bags are used in the city every year. According to the Los Angeles Times, the ban takes effect in January for big stores and next summer for smaller ones.
3.) Starting today, you can send a tweet to an alien. The start-up Lone Signal will send your text message, in all languages, to the Gliese 526 solar system. The company is making use of the Jamesburg Earth Station in California’s Carmel Valley to send the messages. Your first message is free, then a group of 4 messages will cost you 99 cents. One other thing you’ll need with your message – patience. It will take about 18 years for your message to get to the solar system, and the same amount of time for any extra-terrestrial response. Meaning the conversation you start today, won’t be completed until 2048. http://www.lonesignal.com/
