1.) If an asteroid was heading for our planet, who would save Earth? That question has become more relevant since a small asteroid exploded over Russia, injuring up to 1,500 people and causing millions in damage. So the United Nations has stepped up and is in the early stages of setting up the International Asteroid Warning Group so member nations can share data about hazardous space rocks and coordinate an interception plan should a scary space rock be identified. Do we need to worry? Well, Ed Lu, a former NASA astronaut says, "There are 100 times more asteroids out there than we have found and about 1 million asteroids large enough to destroy New York City or larger."
2.) There’s a new method for tracking criminals in cars that could end up saving innocent lives, though it sounds like something out of the movies. Starchase is a cannon built in to the front of a police car which fires a sticky ball at a criminals vehicle. Inside the ball is a GPS tracking chip. Once the Starchase device sticks to the car, the police can back off and follow the criminal on their computers in real time. The real sticky point is the cost as the Starchase technology runs about $5,000 and each bullet will cost taxpayers $500.
3.) If you’re mapping out your Trick or Treat plans for this Thursday, ZipReality Incorporated has produced a list of the 15 best zip codes nationwide for trick-or-treating this Halloween season. They created the list analyzing three evenly-weighted factors zip codes with median home sales prices twice as high as the median price for that metro area, zip codes with the highest density of single-family homes and zip codes that are the most walkable. With all that factored in, you’ll need to head to Bellaire, Texas, a Houston suburb for the best treats. The closest zip to the lowcountry is 33704, in St. Petersburg, Florida.
